Understanding Pain in Ayurveda
In Ayurveda, pain is primarily associated with the Vata dosha, which governs movement and communication in the body. When Vata is out of balance, it can cause pain and discomfort, particularly in the form of joint pain, muscle aches, and nerve pain. However, imbalances in Pitta (responsible for metabolism and digestion) and Kapha (governs structure and lubrication) can also contribute to specific types of pain, such as inflammation and congestion.
Ayurvedic Principles for Pain Management
1. Dosha Assessment: The first step in Ayurvedic pain management is to assess the individual’s dosha constitution and the specific dosha imbalances causing the pain. This involves a detailed examination by Dr. Talton, including pulse diagnosis, observation, and questioning about lifestyle and symptoms.
2. Dietary Adjustments: Ayurveda places great importance on diet as a means of balancing the doshas. Foods that pacify the aggravated dosha are recommended. For example, for Vata-related pain, warm, moist, and nourishing foods are advised, while for Pitta-related pain, cooling and anti-inflammatory foods are beneficial.
3. Herbal Remedies: A variety of herbs are used in Ayurveda to treat pain. Some commonly used herbs include:
• Ashwagandha: Known for its anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties.
• Guggulu: Used for its ability to reduce inflammation and support joint health.
• Turmeric: A powerful anti-inflammatory herb that helps alleviate pain and swelling.
• Boswellia (Shallaki): Effective in reducing joint pain and inflammation.
4. Panchakarma: This is a set of five detoxification therapies aimed at cleansing the body of toxins (ama) that contribute to dosha imbalances and pain. The five therapies include Vamana (emesis), Virechana (purgation), Basti (enema), Nasya (nasal administration), and Raktamokshana (bloodletting). Basti, in particular, is highly recommended for Vata-related pain.
5. External Therapies: Ayurvedic treatments often include external therapies such as:
• Abhyanga: Oil massage using medicated oils to soothe and nourish the tissues, relieve pain, and improve circulation.
• Svedana: Herbal steam therapy to promote sweating and eliminate toxins.
• Lepa: Application of herbal pastes on the affected areas to reduce pain and inflammation.
• Kati Basti: A localized treatment where warm medicated oil is retained on the lower back to relieve pain and stiffness.
6. Yoga and Meditation: Ayurveda emphasizes the importance of physical and mental well-being. Gentle yoga poses, tailored to the individual’s dosha, can help alleviate pain and improve flexibility. Meditation and pranayama (breathing exercises) are recommended to reduce stress and promote mental clarity, which can help in pain management.
7. Lifestyle Modifications: Ayurveda advocates for a balanced lifestyle that includes adequate rest, regular exercise, and routines that align with the body’s natural rhythms. Proper sleep, stress management, and maintaining a positive mental attitude are crucial for managing pain.

I’m sure from time to time we’ve all experienced lapses in our memory. Perhaps we’ve entered a room and forgotten the reason why, or we’ve forgotten to pack something we meant to for a trip. However, if these lapses are recurrent and frequent then it might be more than mere forgetfulness at work. Memory loss can range from mild to extreme. After all, there’s a difference between forgetting to buy milk at the grocery store and forgetting something far more important like a doctor’s appointment or skipping a meal because we’ve forgotten to eat. As with many other ailments, the key to treating memory loss is to strike immediately as a problem is identified. Waiting longer means that it will only get worse. Memory loss is not something that will simply resolve itself over time, luckily there are a number of treatments available to help treat memory loss and keep it from worsening.
The protocol is 6 weeks long. It includes tinctures , teas, diet changes as well as mental health therapy treatments
